Hello lovely… and welcome 🤍✨

Honestly, we can’t quite believe we’re finally writing these words.

The Sugar & Shamrocks Diaries was born from a little dream that has lived quietly in our hearts for years—a dream of Ireland, gentler days, fresh starts, salty sea air, cosy kitchens, and a life that feels softer, calmer, and a bit more meaningful.

This is our space to tell that story written by me (Emma) and my mum, Maura.

Roots, Memories & Childhood Soundtracks

My mum was born in Ireland, with family roots woven deeply into its towns and countryside, and friendships that have always felt like home. Growing up, Ireland wasn’t just a place to us it was a feeling, wrapped in stories, memories, and that warm, nostalgic kind of love.

And for me? It even lived in the music! Boyzone, B*Witched, and Westlife were the absolute soundtrack to my childhood filling bedrooms and car journeys with singalongs and a quiet sense that Ireland was somehow already part of my story.

The Shift in Donegal

In 2008, when my granddad became ill, we travelled to Donegal for the first time… and something inside us shifted forever.

We fell completely, head-over-heels in love:

• The wild beaches and endless Atlantic skies.

• The kindness of strangers who never felt like strangers.

• The slower pace, the fresh sea air, and the feeling of finally being able to breathe properly for the first time.

• The soul food—especially with Mum already dreaming up all the traditional Irish breads, warm bakes, and hearty cosy meals she couldn't wait to whip up in a rustic country kitchen!

From that moment, Ireland stopped being just a place we visited… and became the place we dreamed of belonging.

Choosing the Dream

Life, of course, had its own plans for a while. Years passed, plans paused, and the dream waited patiently while everything else unfolded.

After losing my dad in 2019, something gently shifted. Not with heaviness, but with clarity—a quiet understanding that life is precious, and that dreams aren’t meant to stay saved on the "someday" list forever.

So now… we’re choosing it.

We’re selling up, decluttering, simplifying, and packing memories into boxes. We're letting go of the familiar, holding hands through the scary and exciting parts, and preparing to begin again together.

We’re not there yet, but we are on our way 🍀

Here you’ll find all of it the planning chaos, paperwork stress, nerves, tears, big laughs, little wins, and the magic of watching a dream slowly become real.

Expect plenty of cosy moments, music playing in the background, and lots of delicious kitchen adventures as Mum tests out her favourite baking recipes, classic potato farls, and warm comfort food to keep us fuelled through the move!

The Sugar & Shamrocks Diaries isn’t just about moving countries… it’s about healing, love, courage, fresh starts, and creating a life that truly feels like home.
