We can’t quite believe we’re finally writing this.
Sugar & Shamrocks Diaries was born from a dream that has lived quietly in our hearts for many years – a dream of Ireland, of gentler days, fresh starts, sea air, and a life that feels softer and more meaningful.
This is our space to tell that story.
My mum was born in Ireland, with family roots woven deeply into its towns and countryside, and friends who still feel like home. Growing up, Ireland was always part of our world – in stories, in memories, in the way it was spoken about with warmth and longing.
For me, it even lived in music. Boyzone, B*Witched and Westlife were the soundtrack to my childhood, filling bedrooms and car journeys with a kind of magic that made Ireland feel familiar long before I truly knew why.
In 2008, when my granddad became ill, we travelled to Donegal for the first time. And something changed forever.
We fell in love.
With the wild beaches and endless skies.
With the Atlantic air.
With the kindness of the people.
With the food, the pace of life, the feeling of being able to breathe properly for the first time.
From that moment, Ireland stopped being just a place we loved… and became the place we dreamed of living.
Life, of course, had its own plans for a while. The dream waited patiently as years passed, plans came and went, and timing never quite felt right.
After losing my dad in 2019, something gently shifted. Not with heaviness, but with clarity. A quiet understanding that life is precious, and that dreams are not meant to be saved for “someday.”
So now, we are choosing it.
We’re selling up. Simplifying. Packing memories into boxes. Letting go of the familiar, hand in hand, and preparing to begin again.
We’re not there yet.
But we are on our way.
This blog will hold all of it – the planning, the paperwork, the nerves, the excitement, the tears, the laughter, the cooking, the music in the background, the little wins, the wobbly days, and the magic of watching a dream slowly become real.
Sugar & Shamrocks Diaries is about moving countries, yes…
But it’s also about love, healing, courage, fresh starts, and building a life that feels like home.
